Gama, Vasco de

Gama, Vasco de, der Erste, welcher die Seereise nach Ostindien um das Vorgebirge der guten Hoffnung 1498 zurücklegte und demnach der Begründer der portugiesischen Kolonien an den Küsten Indiens, war 1450 geboren. Schon vor ihm hatte Bartholomäus Diaz (s. d.) den Weg um Afrika aufgefunden, allein erst Vasco de Gama kam wirklich in Calcutta an. Er errichtete mehrere Niederlassungen und wurde der Schöpfer der portugiesischen Macht in Indien, als deren Vicekönig er zu Goa am 25. December 1524 starb.
