Seine wohlbeleibte Gestalt ist zur ergötzlichen Charaktermaske, sein Name zum Sprichwort geworden. Vielfach versuchten spätere Dichter ihn zu kopiren, vergeblich, Falstaff, der in Schwelgerei und Trägheit ergraute, feige Prahlhanns, dem es nie an Lust zur Sünde und guten Einfällen mangelt, bleibt unerreicht.
