Eine Trommel mit YellowcakeYellowcake (englisch ‚Gelbkuchen‘ oder ‚gelber Kuchen‘) ist ein gelbes, pulverförmiges Gemisch von Uranverbindungen.
Im Uranerz ist bis zu 0,1 % Uran in Form von Oxiden enthalten. Nach dem Erzabbau folgt als erste Verarbeitungsstufe die Herstellung von Yellowcake. Die Uranoxide können aus dem abgebauten Erz mit Säuren herausgelöst werden. Aus zwei Tonnen abgebautem Erz wird in Uranmühlen ungefähr ein Kilogramm Yellowcake gewonnen. Es besteht zu 70 bis 80 % aus Uranverbindungen wie Triuranoctoxid (U3O8), hinzu kommen Ammonium- oder Magnesiumdiuranat.[1]
Yellowcake ist der Ausgangsstoff für die Herstellung von Brennelementen. Die weiteren Verarbeitungsschritte hängen davon ab, in welchem Reaktortyp das Uran eingesetzt werden soll. Ist eine Anreicherung erforderlich, so wird Yellowcake in einem chemischen Prozess in das unter Normalbedingungen kristalline, ab 56 °C gasförmige Uranhexafluorid (UF6) umgewandelt. Andernfalls wird es zu Urandioxid oder Uranmetall weiterverarbeitet.
Die Rückstände aus der Gewinnung von Yellowcake (sogenannte Tailings) sind trotz der Uranabtrennung noch radioaktiv und müssen daher geordnet beseitigt werden. Aufgrund ihrer großen Menge und der langen Halbwertszeit der verbleibenden Thorium-, Radium- und Uran-Isotope stellen sie auf lange Zeit ein Umweltproblem dar. Insbesondere die Verstrahlung der Grundwasservorkommen ist ein Problem.
Bei der Diskussion um die vor dem Dritten Golfkrieg nie gefundenen irakischen ABC-Waffen argumentierte die Regierung der USA entgegen eigener Nachforschungsergebnisse mit dem angeblichen Versuch des Irak, sich Lieferungen von Yellowcake aus dem Niger zu beschaffen.
