Leben
Bereits als Kind begann Ethel Merman zu singen. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs trat sie zunächst in Unterhaltungsprogrammen in Kasernen auf. Nach der High School machte sie eine Ausbildung zur Sekretärin, sang in ihrer Freizeit allerdings in Nachtclubs und Vaudeville-Shows. Dies führte sie dann zum Broadway.
Merman wurde eine der großen Stars des Broadway. 1930 debütierte sie am Broadway in dem Musical Girl Crazy und führte hernach zahlreiche musikalische Komödien (Musical Comedy) zu Kassenschlagern, von denen etliche verfilmt wurden. Ausgestattet mit voluminösen Stimmvolumen, war sie eine Vorgängerin von späteren Stars wie Judy Garland und Barbra Streisand. Die Komponisten Irving Berlin und Cole Porter schrieben zahlreiche Songs speziell für sie.
Merman war dreimal verheiratet und Mutter von zwei Kindern, die aus ihrer ersten Ehe stammen. Ihre letzte Ehe mit dem Schauspieler Ernest Borgnine dauerte 1964 allerdings nur 32 Tage. Ethel Merman hatte darüber hinaus auch eine leidenschaftliche Affäre mit der Schriftstellerin Jacqueline Susann.
Für ihr filmisches Schaffen erhielt sie 1954 einen Golden Globe Award für den Film Call Me Madam.
Nach über 30 Jahren am Broadway trat sie, nachdem sie 60 Jahre alt war, nur noch selten auf. Sie war auf Galas zu sehen oder in TV-Shows. In den 1970er Jahren nahm sie eine Studioversion von Annie Get Your Gun auf. Ihren letzten großen Auftritt hatte sie 1982 mit einem Konzert in der Carnegie Hall in New York. Zwei Jahre später starb sie an einem Gehirntumor.
