Macrocystis
Macrocystis Ag., Gattung der Braunalgen (Phaeophyceae) aus der Familie der Laminariazeen, mit riesenhaftem, in wurzel-, stengel- und blattartige Teile gegliedertem Thallus, der mit Schwimmblasen versehen ist und unregelmäßig auf den Blättern zerstreute Fruchthäuschen trägt. M. pyrifera Ag. (s. Tafel »Algen I«, Fig. 2), in der Südsee und im Indischen Ozean, 150–300 m lang, hält sich mit ihren zahlreichen, 60 cm langen Blättern, deren Luftblasen zum Schwimmen dienen, auf der Oberfläche des Meeres.
